ranked
- 1Simple past and past participle of rank.
Critics ranked the album among the year's finest releases.
The candidates were ranked according to their test scores.
Note
One spelling carries both halves of the verb. Transitive rank gives the passive (the candidates were ranked), while intransitive rank, meaning to hold a place, has none: she ranked third. In American usage it can also mean outranked, as in a captain ranked the lieutenant. When the word stands before a noun, as in a ranked list, it has become the adjective.
- 2Arranged or organized in ranks, or placed in order according to rank.
The committee produced a ranked shortlist of the strongest applicants.
A ranked tournament seeds players according to their previous results.

Note
Competitive online games give the word a narrower life: a ranked season or ranked match is play in which a player's standing is at stake, set against unranked play. A streamer can climb from unranked to the top tier within a single ranked season. In everyday prose it sits before its noun, as in a ranked list or a ranked shortlist, and its natural opposite is unranked.
