ravens
SayRAY-vuhnz/ˈɹeɪvənz/
- 1Plural of raven.
A pair of ravens nested on the cliff above the river.
Glossy black ravens scattered across the field as the tractor approached.
Note
A regular plural: a plain -s, with no change to the stem. It counts the birds, not the older uncountable raven that meant rapine or plunder, which takes no plural at all. The same spelling does a second job as the third-person present of the archaic verb raven, 'to seize by violence; to plunder', so in older prose a wolf that ravens is hunting, not multiplying.
