re-lay
Sayree-LAYUS/ˌɹiˈleɪ/UK/ˌɹiːˈleɪ/
Formsre-lays, re-laying, re-laid
- 1To lay something again, such as flooring or railroad track.
Crews will re-lay two miles of track along the river line this summer.
The groundskeepers re-laid the turf on the infield before opening day.
Note
The hyphen does real work: it keeps the word apart from relay, the verb for passing something on, although the closed spelling does turn up, as in relay the pitch. Being re- plus lay, it takes lay's forms, so the past and past participle are re-laid, never re-layed. Its objects are things set down in place: track, tiles, turf, carpet, a playing pitch.
