reached
- 1Simple past and past participle of reach.
The hikers reached the summit just as the sun rose.
By the end of the quarter, sales had reached record levels.
Note
One spelling does two jobs, and the verb's transitive uses decide which constructions are open to it. With a direct object it takes have in the perfect (she had reached the shelf) and turns passive easily (the summit was reached at dawn). Used intransitively, for stretching out the hand, it leans on a preposition instead: reached for the salt, reached across the table. Such uses rarely appear in the passive.
She reached across the table for the bread.
The summit was reached shortly after dawn.
