reasoned
- 1Simple past tense and past participle of reason.
The detective reasoned that the intruder had climbed in through the window.
He had reasoned his way to the only conclusion the evidence allowed.
Note
The form carries every construction the verb takes. It is intransitive in she reasoned that the door was locked, and transitive in the persuading use, where you reasoned a friend out of a plan. After have it makes the perfect, and after be the passive (the case was carefully reasoned). One use meaning to converse or compare opinions is obsolete, so they reasoned together now sounds old-fashioned.
- 2Based on logical thinking and arrived at through careful reasoning rather than guesswork or impulse.
The judge delivered a reasoned opinion supported by years of precedent.
Critics praised the report for its measured, reasoned analysis of the crisis.
Similarlogical, rational, considered, sound, thoughtful
Oppositeirrational, illogical, impulsive
Note
A participle that settled into an adjective, and a gradable one: one argument can be more reasoned than another, or the most reasoned of the lot. That sets it apart from the past tense of reason, which never takes more or most. It describes the product of thinking, not the thinker. Judgments, opinions and analyses are reasoned; a person who thinks well is called reasonable instead.
