reconstructions
- 1Plural of reconstruction.
Historians compared two competing reconstructions of the lost manuscript.
Postwar reconstructions of the old city quarter took nearly a decade.
Note
The plural only works where reconstruction counts things: rival reconstructions of a lost manuscript, of the events behind a crime, or of an unrecorded ancestral word in historical linguistics. When the word names the process itself, as in years of reconstruction after a war, it stays uncountable and singular. Capitalized Reconstruction, the American period from 1865 to 1877, is a proper name and takes no plural.
