records
- 1Plural of record.
The hospital stores patient records in a secure database.
Old vinyl records have become popular again with collectors.
Note
One spelling covers several kinds of plural. Medical and court records are stored information, a shelf of records is vinyl, and an athlete who sets records holds the best marks yet. Programmers use it for sets of data about single items. The noun is easily mistaken for the verb spelled the same: a determiner before it (the records, her records) marks the noun, while a subject before it (she records) marks the verb form.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of record.
The app records how many steps you take each day.
He records his podcast in a small home studio.
Note
A verb that works with or without an object. In "she records the meeting" it takes one, and in "the band records next week" it stands alone. With a deed or a sale, it means entering it into the official public record so that it has legal standing. An obsolete use meaning "repeats" or "practices" belongs to older writing. Don't confuse it with the plural noun, which shares the spelling.
