redder
USRED-ur/ˈɹɛdɚ/UKRED-uh/ˈɹɛdə/
- 1Comparative of red.
The sky grew redder as the sun dipped toward the horizon.
This paint is redder than the sample we chose last week.
Note
A regular comparative with one spelling wrinkle: the final d doubles before -er, because red is a short word ending in a single vowel and consonant. Like most one-syllable adjectives, it takes the suffix rather than more red. It grades red's color shades, including a face flushed with anger or sunburn. It has little use with the card-suit sense, where a card simply is red or is not.
