referenced
- 1Simple past and past participle of reference.
The report referenced several earlier findings on the subject.
Each statistic in the article was carefully referenced to its source.
Note
A regular -ed form, doing double duty as past tense and past participle: the report referenced the study; the study was referenced in the report. Its safest use is citation, either pointing to a source or supplying a text with references. Using it simply to mean "mentioned" (she referenced her childhood) is sometimes criticized; mentioned or referred to avoids the objection. Programmers also use the verb for holding the memory address of a stored value.
