replacing
Sayri-PLAYS-ing/ɹɪˈpleɪsɪŋ/
- 1Present participle of replace.
The city is replacing every streetlight with energy-saving bulbs.
Replacing the engine cost more than the car was worth.
Note
The -ing form does double duty. After a form of be it builds the progressive (the city is replacing its streetlights), and on its own it works as a noun: the subject of a sentence, or the object of a preposition (after replacing the filter). It also inherits an ambiguity from the verb. Replacing the lid can mean putting it back or swapping it for a new one, and only context decides.
