Origin
First recorded in the 14th century meaning 'credit' or 'good reputation', it came through Anglo-Norman and Middle French from Latin reputātiōnem ('consideration, thinking over'), a noun formed from reputō ('reflect upon, reckon over'), itself from re- ('again') plus putō ('reckon, consider'). It displaced the native Old English hlīsa ('reputation, fame').
