The verb takes its object directly: you request a copy, not request for one, because the asking-for is built in. With a person it means requesting someone to act, as in requesting staff to leave early. One -ing spelling does two jobs: a participle in a letter requesting leave, a gerund in requesting help is no weakness. The noun, by contrast, pairs with prepositions: at her request, on request.
