resembling
- 1Present participle and gerund of resemble.
The committee received a complaint resembling several earlier ones.
Resembling her mother in both looks and temper, she fit right into the family.
Note
The -ing form of a strictly transitive verb, so it takes its object directly: a complaint resembling earlier ones, a daughter resembling her mother, with no preposition in between. Older English could use it for likening one thing to another, and earlier still for imitating or counterfeiting. Those uses are now archaic or obsolete, and in modern writing resembling only reports a likeness that already exists.
- 2The act or condition of being similar to, or looking like, someone or something else.
The twins' resembling each other so exactly made it hard for teachers to keep their names straight.
In court, the new logo's resembling a rival's design was the heart of the complaint.
