restored
- 1Past tense and past participle of restore.
Conservators restored the faded mural to its original colors.
The damaged files were restored from last night's backup.
Note
A regular -ed form doing two jobs. As a simple past it stands alone (they restored the mural); as a past participle it follows have in perfect tenses and be in the passive. It carries every meaning of restore, including some that the adjective never takes: property restored to its owner, data restored from a backup, a musical note restored to its original value.
- 2Brought back to a former good condition by being renewed or rebuilt.
The newly restored cathedral drew crowds eager to see its gleaming frescoes.
Visitors admired the restored gardens, replanted exactly as they appeared a century ago.
Similarrefurbished, rebuilt
Oppositedilapidated, derelict
Note
Here the participle has settled into an adjective. It can be graded (more restored, most restored), and it readily takes degree adverbs: a fully restored Volkswagen Beetle, an impeccably restored railway station. Those modifiers are the useful test. When the word answers to fully or impeccably, it describes a condition rather than an action, unlike the verb form, which reports what someone did.
