resulting
- 1Present participle of result.
The merger fell through, resulting in heavy losses for both firms.
A small bug crept into the code, resulting in repeated crashes overnight.
Note
A participle that points two ways, depending on its preposition. Resulting in looks forward to the effect (a bug crept in, resulting in crashes). Resulting from looks back to the cause (losses resulting from the failed merger). After a comma it often does the work of "which led to." Placed directly before a noun, as in the resulting epidemics, it has become the plain adjective instead.
The delays resulting from the storm lasted well into the week.
Most of the damage was resulting from poor maintenance, not from the flood itself.
- 2Following as the effect or consequence of some earlier event or action.
The factory closed last spring, and the resulting job losses hit the whole region.
Heavy edits left the manuscript shorter, and the resulting version read far more clearly.
