reveals
- 1Third-person singular simple present of reveal.
The latest scan reveals a hairline fracture in the bone.
Each chapter reveals another piece of the family's hidden past.
Note
The -s form a singular subject takes in the present: the scan reveals, she reveals. Like its base verb, it is transitive and always needs an object, because something must be revealed. That rule holds for its older religious use too, where a deity reveals what no one could discover unaided. The same spelling is also the plural noun, and a following object marks the verb.
- 2Plural of reveal.
The deep reveals around the old doorways gave the hallway a heavy, fortified look.
The finale strung together three separate reveals in under a minute.
Note
Two quite different nouns share this plural. A builder's reveals are the outer sides of a window or door frame. A storyteller's reveals are the moments when something hidden in a plot comes out, an informal use. Both count freely (deep reveals, three reveals in a row), and the setting, a building or a story, tells you which one is meant.
