revenging
- 1Present participle and gerund of revenge.
Revenging every slight only deepened the feud between the two families.
The prince was revenging his father's murder as the play reached its climax.
Note
The -ing form carries every pattern its verb allows. Most often it takes a direct object, which may be the wrong itself or its victim: revenging a murder, revenging a murdered father. The reflexive pattern adds on or upon, as in revenging oneself on a rival. Used with no object at all, it now sounds archaic. Once it takes an article or a plural, revengings, it has become the noun for the act.
She spent years revenging herself on the partner who had cheated her.
He was revenging himself upon the whole town for one insult.
- 2The act or process of taking revenge for a wrong or injury.
The revenging of old wrongs rarely brings the peace people hope for.
Her revenging of the betrayal cost her more than the original loss ever had.
