rides
- 1Plural of ride.
Her two daily rides to the office take nearly an hour each.
The carnival's older rides were closed for safety inspections.
Note
Beyond fairground attractions and journeys, the plural carries two narrower meanings. In British use, rides are the wide paths or avenues cut through a wood for riding, so a forest can be crossed by rides as well as roads. Informally, rides are simply vehicles, as in admiring someone's rides. Context usually tells these apart from lifts offered in a car.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of ride.
The jockey rides three horses in tomorrow's race.
A surfer rides each wave until it loses its power near the shore.
Note
Most of the work of this form is done by what follows it. It may take what is sat on and steered (she rides a bicycle), what carries a passenger (he rides the bus), or the route itself (rides the trail). In informal US and South African speech it can also take the person carried: he rides his sister to school. The same spelling serves as the plural noun.
