satisfying
- 1Producing a pleasant sense of fulfillment and removing any feeling that something is lacking.
Like the click of a puzzle piece slotting perfectly into place.
A satisfying conclusion tied up every loose thread in the novel.
There's something deeply satisfying about finally clearing a task you dreaded.
Similarsatiating
Oppositeunsatisfying, disappointing, frustrating, unfulfilling
Note
Formed from satisfy plus -ing, the adjective reaches past appetite to the mind. Francis Atterbury in 1705 calls the evidences of the Gospel "firm, solid, and satisfying," meaning they settle doubt. Robert M. Pringle in 2012 writes of "the most satisfying truths in ecology." Arguments, proofs and explanations can all be satisfying in this sense. It grades normally: more satisfying, most satisfying.
- 2Present participle of satisfy.
The company is satisfying demand by opening two new factories.
Each upgrade has been satisfying customers who once threatened to leave.
Note
The verb form shares its spelling with the adjective, and the test is grammar. The verb takes an object (satisfying demand, satisfying a creditor), while the adjective grades (more satisfying, very satisfying). The participle carries every meaning of satisfy, including the narrower ones: discharging a debt or legal claim, and, in logic, making a sentence true under an interpretation.
- 3Pleasing to particular senses, especially hearing and touch, in the gentle tingling way associated with ASMR videos.
Like the pleasant shiver some people feel during gentle, close-up whispers.
The crisp crinkle of folding paper is oddly satisfying to sensitive ears.
Viewers describe the slow, close-up brushing sounds as deeply satisfying.
Similarsoothing, pleasing, relaxing, calming
Oppositegrating, jarring, irritating
Note
A newer use, and one John McWhorter noticed in 2022 in his own children's speech. They do not call a dinner they enjoy satisfying. Instead they keep the word for a narrow band of sensory experiences. That narrowing is how to tell it from the general sense of fulfillment: no lack is being filled, and the pleasure lies in the sound or texture itself.
