scaring
SaySKAIR-ingUS/ˈskɛɹ.ɪŋ/UK/ˈskɛː.ɹɪŋ/
- 1Present participle and gerund of scare.
The sudden bang was scaring everyone gathered in the hall.
Scaring off predators is one purpose of an animal's bright warning colors.
Note
The -ing form does two jobs, and it drops the silent e of scare before the suffix. After a form of be it builds the progressive (the noise was scaring the children); on its own it works as a noun (scaring crows is dull work). Keep it apart from the noun scare: a scare is the fright you get or the thing that causes it, while scaring is the act of frightening.
