scripting
- 1Present participle and gerund of script.
The studio is scripting a sequel to last year's hit.
Scripting the chatbot's responses took the developers a full month.
Note
Two jobs share the spelling: the progressive after be (the studio is scripting a sequel) and the gerund, which still behaves like a verb and takes a direct object (scripting the responses). That object is the quickest way to tell it from the noun for the act, which needs of, as in the scripting of the documentary. Like script itself, it can mean contriving or concocting something, not only writing it.
- 2The act of producing a script, setting out the words and actions that a performance or program will follow.
The scripting of the documentary demanded weeks of interviews and fact-checking.
Sloppy scripting left the actors with lines that made little sense.

Note
The word usually names the work in the mass, but it takes a plural when each script is a pattern people follow. Javier A. Treviño's Goffman's Legacy (2003) speaks of "dramatic scriptings of behavior" that "guide and organize real experience". In that use the scripts belong to everyday life rather than the stage, and scriptings counts the ready-made scenes a media-drenched society hands its members to act out.
