shhs
- 1Third-person singular simple present of shh.
Every time the baby starts to fuss, she shhs him gently.
The librarian shhs students who chatter near the front desk.
Note
The verb inherits both jobs of the interjection: demanding silence and soothing someone who is crying. A librarian shhs chattering students, and a parent shhs a fussing baby. It works with an object or without one. You can say she shhs him, or simply she shhs, when the person being hushed goes unnamed.
- 2Plural of shh.
Her repeated shhs finally quieted the restless audience.
A few sharp shhs from the front rows silenced the whispering.
Note
Counting a hush is possible because the sound has been turned into a noun: a few sharp shhs, her repeated shhs. Only this hushing use takes a plural. The biologists' SHH, short for sonic hedgehog, is used as an uncountable noun and stays without an -s. The ending is a bare -s, and the same spelling also serves as the present-tense verb.
