sided
SaySYD-id/ˈsaɪdɪd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of side.
The council sided with residents who opposed the new highway.
Many border towns sided with the rebels once the fighting reached their fields.
Note
One spelling does double duty, as with any regular verb: she sided with us, she has sided with us. In the alliance meaning the verb is intransitive and takes with (rarely in with), so it has no passive. The passive belongs to the carpenter's and builder's uses instead: a timber is sided to a set thickness by trimming, and a house is sided when it is furnished with siding.
