sobbed
- 1Simple past and past participle of sob.
He sobbed into his hands when they told him the team had lost.
She had sobbed all night before finally falling asleep.
Note
Both of sob's weeping constructions live in this form. Used alone it is intransitive (he sobbed into his hands). With an object, the object is the words spoken through tears: she sobbed her thanks, he sobbed out an apology. The doubled b follows the rule for short words ending in one vowel and one consonant, as in robbed and throbbed. The same spelling also serves sob in its sense of "soak."
She sobbed her thanks to the nurse who had stayed with her.
"I never meant to hurt anyone," he sobbed.
