societies
- 1Plural of society.
Historians compare how different societies organized labor and property.
Several charitable societies merged to pool their funding and staff.
Note
Only some meanings of society can take a plural. The countable ones pluralize freely: whole cultures compared side by side, or clubs and associations such as charitable societies. The uncountable ones do not. Society meaning the public at large, or high society, stays singular, so “a danger to society” never becomes “a danger to societies” in that sense. The spelling follows the usual rule: -y after a consonant becomes -ies.
