somehow
SUM-how/ˈsʌmhaʊ/
- 1By some means or in some way that is not yet known or explained.
The cat had somehow opened the locked cabinet during the night.
Despite the chaos, the team somehow finished the project on time.
Similarmysteriously, inexplicably
Note
Built from some + how, it answers the question "how?" with a shrug: the means existed, but no one can name them. Its everyday job is to register surprise at an outcome ("but somehow he is") more than to describe a method. Emerson Hough's The Purchase Price (1910) stacks it into a run of deliberate vagueness: "carried somehow, somewhither, for some reason."
