spied
SaySPYD/spaɪd/
- 1Simple past tense and past participle of spy.
He spied a familiar face in the crowd and waved.

Note
Two quite different verbs share this one form. With a direct object it usually means caught sight of: she spied a gap in the hedge, close to espied. Without one, often followed by on, it means watched in secret: they spied on the neighbors. The construction tells you which is meant. In spelling, the y of spy becomes i before -ed, as in tried and cried.
