stared
SaySTAIRDUS/stɛɹd/UK/stɛəd/
- 1Simple past and past participle of stare.
He stared blankly at the screen, unsure how to respond.
She had stared at the letter for an hour before finally opening it.
Note
One regular form does double duty: stare drops nothing but adds -d, and the result serves as both simple past (she stared) and participle (she had stared). Most uses are intransitive and take at, but the transitive sense of influencing someone by a fixed look allows a passive: he was stared into silence. In older writing, something that stared had bristled or stood out, rather than looked.
