stationing
- 1Present participle and gerund of station.
The navy is stationing more ships in the region this spring.
Stationing observers at each polling site helped prevent fraud.
Note
The -ing form does two jobs. After be it marks the progressive: the navy is stationing ships. Without an auxiliary it is a gerund that still acts like a verb and takes a direct object, as in stationing observers. That object separates it from the military noun, which needs of: the stationing of a brigade. Because station is usually transitive, the participle almost always has something being placed.
- 2The placing of military personnel in a particular location to carry out their duties.
The stationing of an entire brigade near the capital sparked widespread protests.
Critics questioned the stationing of forces so close to the contested border.
