steered
- 1Simple past and past participle of steer.
The captain steered the ship through the narrow channel before dawn.
She gently steered the conversation back to the main question.
Note
One regular -ed form does double duty, serving the past tense as well as the perfect and the passive. Because steer works both with and without an object, only its transitive uses take the passive: a ship, a herd or a wavering committee can be steered somewhere, but a boat that steered well was simply answering the helm. The reflexive survives too, as in she steered herself toward medicine.
