stickies
- 1Plural of sticky.
Her desk was a chaos of pens, mugs, and curling stickies.
He peeled a few stickies off the report before filing it.
Note
One spelling covers several quite different things. In an office, stickies are adhesive notes curling off a desk. On a forum, they are the threads pinned above the rest. In Australian colloquial use, they are sweet dessert wines, and in slang they are resinous marijuana buds. Context nearly always settles which is meant, and every one of them takes the regular consonant-plus-y plural in -ies.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of sticky.
The admin stickies any announcement that members need to read first.
He always stickies the rules thread before opening a new forum.
Note
Only the forum sense of sticky has a verb behind it. It is transitive and takes the thread as its object: the admin stickies the announcement. The form is spelled the same as the plural noun, which can name the very threads being pinned, so "she stickies the stickies" is grammatical, if ungainly. The adjective meanings, such as tacky, awkward and humid, have no verb.
