straighter
Noun pluralstraighters
Pluralstraighters
- 1Comparative form of straight.
The new highway is straighter and faster than the winding coastal route.
After the carpenter planed the board, its edge was much straighter than before.
Note
A regular -er comparative, paired with the superlative straightest, it can grade every sense of the adjective: a straighter line, a straighter bat in cricket, a straighter answer from someone who has stopped evading. Keep it apart from the cigarette noun, which shares the spelling but takes a plural, straighters. The adjective never takes a plural.
- 2A cigarette made with tobacco rather than marijuana.
After he quit weed, he reached for a straighter whenever he needed a smoke.
She passed me a straighter and lit one for herself.

Note
Smokers' slang that sorts cigarettes by what is inside the paper. Joseph Manchon's Le slang (1923), a French guide to familiar and vulgar English, sets straighter beside straight and straight cut and explains all three as a Virginia-tobacco cigarette. It is an ordinary countable noun (a straighter, two straighters) and belongs to casual talk. In neutral writing, cigarette says the same thing without the slang.
