streets
- 1Plural of street.
Crews repaved the downtown streets over the long weekend.
Protesters filled the streets around the capitol building.
Note
A regular plural with a plain -s, spelled exactly like the verb form (the council streets the new estate). In the plural, the word often widens from roads to a whole urban setting: protesters fill the streets, and the phrase means the public life of the city, not just its paving. The article usually settles which word is meant: "the streets" is the noun.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of street.
Note
One -s form serves a surprisingly wide verb. A developer streets farmland by laying out roads. A landlord who streets a tenant throws them out, and by extension a side that streets its rivals defeats them heavily. A new release streets when it goes on sale, and in Mormon usage a missionary streets by preaching in public. The subject and object show which meaning is meant.
