Noun pluralsubmittings
Pluralsubmittings
- 1Present participle and gerund of submit.
The lawyer is submitting new evidence to the court this afternoon.
Submitting applications to several universities improves your chances of acceptance.
Note
The -ing form carries every use of submit, and the construction tells them apart. Submitting to a ruling or an opponent means giving way, with to naming the power yielded to. Submitting a paper or an application means putting it forward, with a direct object and no preposition. The final t doubles before -ing. As a gerund it heads a phrase the way a noun would: submitting early helps.
- 2An act of yielding to another's will or authority, or of putting something forward to be judged or chosen.
With something of her original archness, mingling with graver rebuke, Honoria reminded the rebel of certain dutiful expressions, and religious submittings of the will, with which he had so lately gratified her.
1827, Anna Maria Porter, Honor O'HaraDid the Creator see fit to adopt the plan of creation through a series of variations, and submittings of them to selection; or did He, by his fiat, evoke the human form into its acknowledged perfection in an instant?

Note
A rare, formal noun that tends to appear in the plural with of after it, and it covers both halves of submit. Anna Maria Porter's Honor O'Hara (1827) speaks of "religious submittings of the will," which is giving way. The British and Foreign Medico-chirurgical Review (1869) speaks of "submittings of them to selection," which is putting forward to be judged. For either meaning today, submission is the natural word.
