subs
- 1Plural of sub.
The navy plans to retire its oldest subs over the next decade.
I can follow the show only if I turn on the subs.
Note
Sub is clipped from several longer words, so the plural shifts with the setting: the navy's subs, a tray of subs, subs on the bench, subs on the screen. In British clubs, subs are also the membership fees, short for subscriptions, as when members pay their subs for the year.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of sub.
Ms. Lopez subs for the regular math teacher twice a week.
A volunteer subs each new episode into English within hours of its release.
Note
The verb splits by region. In informal American use a teacher subs for an absent colleague, with for before the person replaced; in British use a manager subs a player, and a subeditor subs copy for the paper. Online slang adds a fourth job: a fan who subs an episode supplies its subtitles.
