taping
Pluraltapings
Pluraltapings
- 1The act of recording sound or images on tape or, by extension, on another medium.
The taping of the documentary required three weeks on location.
During the taping, a power failure interrupted the final scene.

Note
As a countable noun it names a single recording session, an event people can go to, as when visitors attend the taping of a game show like The Price Is Right. Used without an article, it names the activity in general. The word has outlived its medium: a show recorded digitally still has a taping, and nobody expects magnetic tape to be involved.
- 2The act of attaching adhesive tape to a surface or object.
The taping of the windows protected the glass before the storm.
Proper taping of the athlete's ankle prevented further injury.

Note
The noun works two ways. As a mass noun it names the activity, as in careful taping of a seam. As a count noun each application is one taping, with a regular plural. Forensic Science Progress (2012) speaks of making "the necessary tapings" with Scotch Magic tape, covering an area systematically. The plural tapings also serves the recording sense, so context must show whether tape was stuck down or run through a machine.
- 3Present participle of tape.
The crew is taping the season finale this week.
Volunteers were taping flyers to every lamppost in town.
Note
One -ing form does two jobs. After be it builds the progressive (the crew is taping), and on its own it fills a noun slot (taping takes patience). It drops the silent e of tape and carries every verb sense: binding, recording, and the informal 'figuring out'. The gerund use shades into the recording noun and the adhesive noun, which can also be counted and pluralized.
