taught
Often confused with taut
- 1Simple past and past participle of teach.
The professor taught organic chemistry for two decades.
Basic first aid is taught in every introductory course here.
Note
An irregular past that keeps its Old English shape, tāhte, instead of adding -ed. One spelling covers both the simple past (she taught French) and the participle after have or be (has taught, was taught). Because teach takes two objects, a passive can be built on either one: the class was taught French, or French was taught to the class. The same pattern gives taught him a lesson, the punishing sense.
