A plural that works for more than birds. Besides the small freshwater ducks, it counts shades of the dark bluish-green color (the teals and turquoises of a palette) and, in Australian politics, teal independents. With the ducks, hunters and birders often leave the plural unmarked (a bag of teal) and keep teals for individual birds or distinct kinds.
