teams
- 1Plural of team.
Rescue teams searched the mountainside throughout the night.
Both research teams published conflicting results within the same month.
Note
The plural carries every sense of the noun, old and new. Teams of horses or oxen are draft animals harnessed together, the use the verb 'to haul with a team' grew from. Teams of people, in sport or at work, are the everyday sense. A newer use names the opposing sides of an unsettled debate, so rival camps can be called two teams. An obsolete sense once applied the word to a group of young ducks.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of team.
The startup regularly teams with universities to test new prototypes.
She teams up with a different collaborator for each exhibition.
Note
One spelling serves several verbs. Most often it is intransitive and paired with up: she teams up with a rival. It can also take an object, as when a coach teams two players together or a driver teams logs to the mill. Keep it apart from teems, as in a river teems with fish. In that sentence teams is simply a misspelling.
