textures
- 1Plural of texture.
Rough and smooth textures alternate across the sculpture's polished surface.
The designer combined contrasting textures of velvet and linen in one room.
Note
The plural belongs to the countable side of a noun that is often uncountable. We speak of the texture of bread in general, but of textures when several distinct surfaces are set side by side, such as rough against smooth. In computer graphics the plural comes naturally, since each image laid over a polygon counts as one texture. The same spelling also serves the present-tense verb, so context decides which is meant.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of texture.
The artist textures each canvas with thick layers of paint before adding color.
This software textures the model so the surface looks like weathered stone.
Note
The form that goes with he, she, it or a singular noun: the artist textures, the software textures. Its object is usually the thing being given a surface, such as a canvas, a wall or a 3D model, not the texture itself. Elsewhere in the present the bare form is used instead: I texture, they texture.
