thefts
SayTHEFTS/θɛfts/
- 1Plural of theft.
Police have linked a string of car thefts to the same small gang.
The museum tightened security after two thefts in a single month.
Note
The plural counts incidents, one stolen bike or one emptied till at a time: a spate of bike thefts, three thefts from the same shop. When the crime itself is meant, the uncountable singular does the work, as in arrested for theft or theft is rising. Reports of a trend can use either, but thefts keeps the reader thinking of separate cases.
