tissues
- 1Plural of tissue.
He kept a packet of tissues in his coat pocket for the cold weather.
The soft tissues around the joint had become swollen and tender.
Note
A plural that does two quite different jobs. It counts sheets of absorbent paper (a box of tissues), and it names distinct kinds of cellular tissue in biology (the soft tissues around a joint). When the paper or the woven gauze is meant as a material, the singular mass noun usually serves instead: a gift is wrapped in tissue, not in tissues.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of tissue.
Note
The -s form of a weaving verb, used after he, she, it or a singular noun: the workshop tissues, the weaver tissues. Its sense is to interweave, so it usually takes the threads as its object and says where they go, with into or through. Because the spelling is shared with the plural noun, a subject before it and threads after it are what mark the verb.
