tools
- 1Plural of tool.
The mechanic spread her tools across the workbench and got to work.
Modern software developers rely on a wide range of debugging tools.
Note
The plural covers every sense of the noun, from wrenches on a workbench to software used to build other software. In baseball it names a player's skills, such as hitting and running. Applied to people, it means those used by others, often without realizing it, the way pawns are. The same spelling also serves as the verb form (she tools leather). An article or number in front marks the noun.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of tool.
The machinist tools each component to precise specifications.
The artisan tools intricate patterns into the cover of every notebook.
Note
Most uses take a direct object: a craftsman tools leather, a supplier tools a workshop with equipment. The exception is the intransitive meaning "works very hard," where no object follows the verb. In slang it can mean putting someone down in order to use them for one's own goal. An older British slang use meant driving a coach or other vehicle. Both slang uses also take an object.
