traced
SayTRAYST/ˈtɹeɪst/UK/tɹeɪst/
- 1Simple past and past participle of trace.
The detective traced the phone call to an abandoned warehouse.
The power failure was eventually traced to a loose wire in the basement.
Note
One spelling does two jobs: the plain past (she traced the outline) and the participle after have or in the passive (the leak was traced to a valve). Because nearly every sense of trace takes an object, the passive comes easily, especially for following something back to its cause or origin. Older texts may show the obsolete intransitive use, where traced simply means walked or traveled.
