trainings
- 1Plural of training.
The HR department scheduled multiple trainings throughout the quarter.
New employees must complete all required trainings before they begin fieldwork.
Note
A countable use of a noun that usually resists counting. Training as skill-building or upbringing takes no plural; a training as a distinct session does. The plural belongs to institutional prose. Jay Caspian Kang writes of money spent on "diversity trainings" in 2021, yet a Pennsylvania Senate journal of 1834 already uses it. The -s also marks the noun: the gerund of train never takes it.
