transcripts
- 1Plural of transcript.
The court released the transcripts of the witness testimony to the press.
Researchers compared the interview transcripts line by line for patterns.
Note
A regular -s plural that covers every kind of copy the singular names: courtroom and interview records, a student's certified academic record, and, in genetics, the RNA molecules produced by transcription. The same spelling also serves the rare verb form, but in almost any modern sentence the word is this noun, usually with an article or number before it: the transcripts, two transcripts.
- 2Third-person singular simple present indicative of transcript (obsolete; the modern verb is transcribe).
Note
Here the spelling belongs to a verb that has nearly vanished: to transcript, meaning to transcribe, is both rare and obsolete. A sentence like "the clerk transcripts each hearing" will strike most readers as a slip, so present-day writing should use transcribes instead. Leave this spelling to the everyday plural noun, where it causes no confusion.
