translated
- 1Simple past and past participle of translate.
He translated the ancient poem for a new scholarly edition.
Her keynote speech was translated live for the international audience.
Note
One spelling does two jobs: the simple past (she translated the letter) and the participle that follows have or be (has translated, was translated). Because translate can also be intransitive, as in a joke that translates poorly, the past form can appear without an object: the pun never translated. Only the transitive uses make a passive. Was translated always implies someone did the rendering, whether between languages, into plainer words, or from one medium to another.
