treaties
- 1Plural of treaty.
Several trade treaties were renegotiated during the summit.
The historian compared the wording of three nineteenth-century treaties.
Note
Only the countable meanings of treaty take this plural. Treaties are formal agreements between states or international organizations, or, in older usage, private compacts and even systematic discourses, what we would call treatises. The uncountable meanings have no plural at all: negotiation, as in the archaic phrase in treaty, and the obsolete senses of treatment and discussion. Parties may be in treaty, but never in treaties.
