tripped
- 1Simple past and past participle of trip.
The waiter tripped and spilled the tray of drinks.
He had tripped on that same step many times before.
Note
A regular past form with one spelling quirk: the final p of trip doubles before -ed. The constructions it allows depend on the meaning. Stumbling is intransitive, so it takes only have (she had tripped on the step). Knocking someone off their feet or setting off a switch is transitive and also forms a passive (he was tripped by a defender). A circuit can even trip by itself.
The striker was tripped just outside the box.
The breaker tripped and the lights went out.
