truths
- 1Plural of truth.
Scientists test their theories against observable truths.
Great novels often reveal uncomfortable truths about human nature.
Note
The countable side of a word that usually resists counting. In the singular, truth names the quality of being true or the facts taken as a whole. Truths counts them one at a time: observable truths, uncomfortable truths, the truths a novel lays bare. Reach for the plural when you mean separate facts or statements. Keep the singular for accuracy, honesty or faithfulness itself.
- 2Third-person singular simple present of truth.
Note
The form a singular subject takes in the present: the editor truths the figures, the program truths its clock. Only the meaning of making something exact is in ordinary use. Declaring something true is obsolete, and truthing in the sense of telling the truth is nonstandard. The spelling matches the noun plural, so position decides: after a subject it is the verb, and after these or many it is the noun.
